35mm/2.8 lenses were built by Minolta throughout the life of the SR bayonet. However, the design and optical construction changed over the years from the first 1958 version.

Of the various versions of this lens, this is the MDII version (5 lenses/5 groups) launched in 1978, which was produced until 1981 and is one of the last variants. The optical design did not change later.

Compared to the previous version (also MD W.Rokkor, but MD I), the filter diameter was reduced from 55mm to 49mm and the weight was reduced from 205 grams to 165 grams by replacing metal with plastic (e.g. aperture ring).
